About Cheryl
Hi! I’m Cheryl, a 29-year-old Minnesotan living in Pittsburgh. I like to knit, sew, and do whatever other crafty things grab my attention. My red hair is completely natural, and, yes, that’s it in my header.
I began knitting during winter break of my freshman year of college, 2004. My now-MIL taught me how to knit and purl (Continental style–I’m a “picker”), and I’ve had something on my needles ever since. Before moving to Pittsburgh, I worked at my LYS, Yarn Harbor, for nearly five years as a teacher and sales associate. If you’re ever in Duluth, MN, be sure to check this store and its amazing knitters out!
I learned how to sew from my mom beginning at the age of 9 and competed in sewing competitions growing up. I competed at all levels, eventually taking second place in the national Make It With Wool competition as a high school senior. When I graduated from high school, I needed a break from sewing for perfection, so I didn’t do much of it for a while. I’m now sewing more than ever before and finding a good balance of high quality craftsmanship and not driving myself crazy. If you’re curious, my sewing machine is a Viking Anna and my serger is a Bernina 800DL. I won both machines during my time as a competitive seamstress, and they’ve served me well.
I’m married to a wonderful man who supports my making and understands how much it means to me. We live an adorable duplex with our two kitties.
My biggest WiP right now is a doctorate in English with a particular interest in the history of readers and book culture. Hopefully I’ll be finished with my dissertation in spring of 2017. When I’m not curled up with a book or a project, you’ll probably find me swing dancing wherever I can find some music.
Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the internet! I’d love to hear from you in the comments or at redknitter(at)gmail(dot)com
Oh, and I knit too. Not as prolific as yourself mainly just easy projects when I’m not sewing. Oh and a redhead too!
